On September 16-18, 2015, representatives from 25 member institutions gathered together at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina for the fourth annual Seminary Stewardship Alliance conference.

Each year, this conference provides an opportunity for SSA liaisons to come together to encourage one another towards fulfilling the mission of the SSA: to cultivate sustainable practices, advance scholarship and nourish dialogue amongst member institutions. Through round-table discussions, lectures, fellowship, and a local excursion, participants were able to do just that.

Conference participants visited ECO Shape farms where they learned about aquaponics, butterfly gardens, composting and more from a local family seeking to live sustainably.

The renowned Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger, Author of The Beauty of the Earth and Professor of Religion and Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning at Hope College, was the keynote speaker for the event. His lectures, Eschatology Shapes Ethics and The Biblical Job Goes to Seminary, proved to be some of the most insightful encounters of the conference.

“One of the great blessings of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance annual conference is that it provides a unique opportunity to cross-pollinate ideas with scholars and representatives of institutions from across the spectrum Christian theological education,” shared Dr. Mark Liederbach, Vice President of the SSA and Professor of Theology, Ethics and Culture, Vice President for Student Services and Dean of Students at Southeastern.

The conference concluded with a round table discussion led by Dr. Tom Tumblin of Asbury about the future of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance. Liaisons were able to share their needs, desires and vision for the SSA and ideas about how it could grow and continue to improve.

“More than anything, I personally valued the opportunity to discuss the future of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance,” reflected Dr. Seth Bible, President of the SSA and Director of Student Life at Southeastern. Looking to the future, Dr. Bible was excited to announce the date and host for the 2016 conference, which will take place on October 13-15 at George Fox Evangelical Seminary in Portland, Oregon.

“George Fox Evangelical Seminary is excited to be hosting the next SSA conference,” shared Dr. Dan Brunner, Professor of Christian History and Formation at George Fox. “The west coast outreach of Blessed Earth is located in Portland under the leadership of A.J. Swoboda, and the 2016 conference will be the first time SSA has ventured West of the mighty Mississippi River.”

“I would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended this year’s conference,” shared Dr. Bible. “It truly was a blessing to take time to celebrate another year of hard but productive work in the area of Creation Care.”
